How Cogwright Came to Be
Cogwright opened its workshop on Jalan Tun H S Lee in the early 2000s, occupying a narrow shophouse that had previously served the street's older trade community. The location was not chosen for footfall — it was chosen because the neighbourhood had the right kind of quiet, the sort that suits work requiring a steady hand and an unhurried mind.
The workshop was founded by a watchmaker who had spent a decade and a half learning the craft in Malaysia and, for a brief period, in Switzerland — not at a formal school but in small repair workshops where the emphasis was on doing the job correctly rather than quickly. That sensibility carried over into Cogwright's operating approach from the first day it opened.
Over the years, the workshop built its reputation mainly through word of mouth. Clients who brought in a quartz daily-wearer for a battery change and left with a written condition note tended to come back. Collectors who wanted a trusted pair of hands for a mechanical piece they valued found the workshop through referrals. Families with an old pocket watch or a grandfather's wristwatch heard the name from someone who had been through the experience.
The team has grown modestly since those early years, but the approach has not changed: examine first, explain clearly, work carefully, and do not proceed until the client understands what is involved. We do not upsell unnecessarily and we do not rush work that needs time.
Cogwright remains a workshop, in the proper sense. There is a bench, tools that have been maintained for years, a timing machine, and people who know how to use them. That is the business, and it is what we are proud of.

Trained across workshops in Malaysia and Europe, Rafi has been repairing and restoring mechanical movements for over two decades. He leads all vintage and heirloom work personally.

Suraya handles everyday timepiece care and quartz servicing. Her attention to case condition and seal integrity means that even routine work leaves the bench properly done.
Daniel Chin
WORKSHOP ASSISTANT · CLIENT LIAISON
Daniel manages intake, condition documentation, and client communication. He ensures that every piece entering and leaving the workshop is properly recorded and that clients are kept informed.

These are not policies written for a website. They are the habits built over years of doing this work carefully.
Written Condition Notes
Every piece receives a written assessment before work begins. You collect with a note of what was found and what was done.
No Unsanctioned Work
If our assessment reveals additional issues, we contact you before proceeding. Work beyond the agreed scope requires your approval first.
Water Resistance Checks
Where the case design allows, we verify water resistance after any work that involves opening the case, including battery changes.
Timing Machine Verification
Mechanical movements are tested for accuracy on a timing machine after servicing. We record the figures and include them in the condition report.
Secure Storage On-Premises
Pieces left with us are stored securely within our workshop. We do not send watches to third-party facilities unless parts sourcing requires it and you are informed.

Watch Repair & Timepiece Restoration in Kuala Lumpur
Cogwright is one of the longer-standing independent watch repair workshops in Kuala Lumpur's city centre. Our work covers a broad range: quartz battery and seal service, full mechanical overhauls for automatic and hand-wound movements, and careful restoration of vintage or inherited timepieces that require particular attention and sourcing of period-appropriate components.
Watch repair at a proper standard requires the right tools, working knowledge of a wide range of movement types, and — perhaps most importantly — the patience to diagnose correctly before touching anything. These are not qualities that can be shortcut. They develop through years of encountering different movements, different fault patterns, and different material conditions.
Our workshop is located on Jalan Tun H S Lee in central Kuala Lumpur, a street with a long commercial history that remains accessible from most parts of the city. Walk-ins are welcome during our hours, and we are happy to discuss a piece before any commitment is made to leave it with us.
